I am heading off to Ireland next week to present a paper in the HNS 2026 conference organised by the Historical Novel Society.
I will be talking about how sixteen of the Norman invaders of Ireland in 1169 were the sons and grandsons of Nest ferch Rhys, the heroine of my Conquest novels. Her son, Maurice FitzGerald, built the first Norman castle in Maynooth, where the conference is taking place. Her descendants became known in Ireland as the Geraldines.
I will be talking about transforming sources – which might be places, images, artefacts, maps, primary texts such as chronicles, sagas, and poetry – into fiction in the Conquest trilogy and in my novel, The Viking Hostage.
There will be a report on the conference in my newsletter, Just Meandering, in September, and I will give further details on my presentation in my next post here.
