A deserted castle

It’s 1093 and the trobairitz Beatriz is in the Pyrenees where she encounters murder, a revenant, and some very bad weather.

‘As I rounded the next twist in the ridge path, I saw the castle on a hill to the right above the village. We ceased our conversation to urge on our exhausted horses as they began to climb again, up the steep path to Escaló Castle. The road spiked sharply back and forth on itself to manage the incline. At the top, the long train of horses and mules clustered and milled in the constrained space in front of the castle gate, but the studded wooden doors stood blankly closed before us. What was taking so long for the guards to let us in? Bertran rode close and thumped on the huge door with a fist, hollering, ‘Open up!’ but there was no response.’
