‘Anna noticed a huge, pale toad, its eyes bulging and swivelling towards them, its mouth pulsing as it croaked, white skin cladding its muscled limbs, making its body appear horribly naked.’
It is Hallow’s Eve 1093, and the trobairitz Beatriz and lady’s maid Anna are in the Pyrenees. On this night, the veil between the living and the spirit world wears thin. It is the time of the second death, when the dead walk, when there is an exodus of ghosts heralded by angels. Owls and other night birds are devils flying over the roof to carry away the souls of the recently dead.
Beatriz and Anna are about to encounter murder, a revenant, and some very bad weather. Salt’s Wound is published in paperback and ebook on 3 November.
